When it comes to NAS, everyone should be familiar with: Synology, which is the constant innovation of the software (DSM system) ease of use, so that NAS really begins to be suitable for family & personal use.

The landlord has been paying attention to NAS for a long time. He always hopes that the manufacturer can launch a product that combines data storage/video playback/route switching. In the past 10 years, I purchased the flagship home router Buffalo WZR_HP_G300NH for the NAS environment. It has a Gigabit Ethernet interface. In addition to the routing function, it also provides download/cloud storage for external USB devices. But after the early adopters, this primary function is easily replaced by various online cloud services.

Time flies, the landlord’s router has reached the edge of elimination, similar products have not appeared. . . Until June of this year, the landlord saw the first 3-in-1 product Huawei glory cube, unfortunately its function is too simple, can not meet the needs of the landlord; follow-up did not see the traditional NAS manufacturers follow-up launch similar products.

A few months ago, the landlord took a scrapped notebook and tried to install Taihe Qunhui early adopters, only to really understand the meaning of the phrase “NAS manufacturers are originally software companies”, which is why NAS prices remain high. – “The genuine license price of various derivative software of NAS should be included in the price of the host”; through trial use, it also determined the determination to purchase a NAS. It coincides with the recent increase in wages, not much to say, buy and buy!

Why buy it?

As a rational consumer (si), buying thousands of digital products for me personally must have several reasons for buying:

1. Make photos and videos of your baby and family safer

Regardless of whether you save your hard drive, USB flash drive, or CD-ROM, storage device damage is a matter of time. Although there are various cloud disks, I personally don’t have the habit of uploading private photos to public clouds.

5, replace the various boxes

Radio and television have been moving in succession, and various boxes have been killed. So can NAS replace the box? I will tell you later in this article.

So the question is coming, which NAS technology is strong?

In the home field, Synology has a better reputation for software quality & ease of use, and is now moving towards professionalism. In the commercial sector, QNAP is stronger in data security and professional functions, and is also making unremitting efforts to capture home users. It is very appropriate to describe the two NAS vendors with the same way.

To be honest, the functions that ordinary users will use, the current two products can be done very well. It is nothing more than a slight difference in ease of operation and UI aesthetics.

So first of all, I personally pay more attention to data security, so I initially planned to choose QNAP’s products. As for why Weilian’s NAS security performance is better? The main reason is that it has a more DOM card on the hardware than Synology’s NAS. The NAS-specific operating system is installed in the DOM card. It will not be booted due to the damage of the hard disk, and the boot status will not be frequent. Reading the hard disk is good for disk health and hibernation (personal point of view). In contrast, Synology, because there is no DOM card, its operating system is installed on the user’s hard disk, the only benefit may be to effectively reduce the cost.

Secondly, the group’s DSM system can be freely experienced because it is cracked, and the freshness is not so strong. I hope that the future version of DSM can solve this problem better.

The earliest to know this series of products stems from CHH’s evaluation of the x51 series 2-position TS-251. The wheel said that because of the black group, the home NAS market has suffered more or less impact. However, this also brings a benefit, that is, NAS vendors finally realized their own hardware shortages, began to make changes in the NAS hardware configuration, and developed new features in conjunction with new hardware.

QNAP TS-451 is one such product: it uses Intel’s latest X86 architecture Celeron J1800 2.41Ghz dual-core processor, and can be up to 2.58Ghz; the biggest feature is: it has built-in HDMI interface, And support MCE remote control, with QNAP QvPC technology, can be directly connected to the TV through the built-in XBMC open source player to play HD video stored in the NAS, and even connected to the monitor and mouse, it can be used as a PC use.

Some people may think that this feature is of no use, and it is more powerful to have a box. But the landlord doesn’t think so, not only is the TV cabinet more refreshing, but at least one remote control is also excellent. This is also the function that I have always hoped that NAS can provide. It has finally been realized. It must be it. It doesn’t matter, buy it and buy it!

In addition, the current development trend of NAS is to reduce the core of the system itself, and a large number of applications are presented in the form of APP, what functions users need, and can be downloaded by themselves. Thanks to the second development platform of QNAP, it is temporarily ahead of the group in the number of APPs. Of course, some application quality may not be as good.

The delay in the listing of the same level of product DS 415+ before the group was also one of the reasons why the landlord decided to try the China Unicom. Up to now, 415+ should already be available for purchase. The price comparison is slightly more expensive than TS-451. For consumers, it is basically a trade-off between DSM system and HDMI interface.

The most important thing about the NAS disk is the addition of an error recovery control function. Each name is different: TLER (Western Data) / CCTL (Toshiba) / ERC (Seagate); previously there is no such thing, nothing more than an ordinary hard disk plus a dedicated Firmware thing. After the emergence of the NAS disk, the manufacturer saw the sweetness, and the other way to make the normal disk open error recovery control is gone. The magic is that the two Toshiba 2T ordinary plates that the landlord bought last year actually took it. Checked that Toshiba’s DT01ACA200/300 (only 2TB and 3TB) clearly supported these two, but this year’s new support does not support the landlord.

1. Initial installation process, all the following demos are based on QTS 4.1.1 version

QTS is the operating system of the QNAP NAS device. For the first time installation, please use the browser to access the [http://start.qnap.com/cn/] page. There are process installation instructions, followed by cloud installation and local installation. The way, personal recommendation chooses the local installation method, download the Qfinder software provided in the page.

Before installing the QTS system, the first is the hardware installation. You need to insert the hard disk first, connect the power cable, network cable and access the home network, and then use the computer to access the above page. After success, please choose your own NAS model.

2, Raid brief introduction and use selection

The Raid function is the basis for NAS to implement secure storage. Another method is to use backup software to make multiple disks or even remote backups.

The former is worry-free and convenient, but it has a huge waste of disk space; the latter has higher technical requirements for users, but it saves disk space.

For the lazy guy of the landlord, it is natural to use the Raid method to achieve it.

Note: It is still necessary to emphasize data security. With NAS, it is not foolproof. Quote from PCEVA a big word: “The disk is RP, the data is lost by yourself.” Data security is a matter of habit, and RAID doesn’t make your data more reliable. RAID is passive and it can’t change your storage habits. Even the most reliable RAID 1, if it is neglected, will still cause data loss. When the hand owes it to delete the file, and then overwrites the file storage location, no one can save it.

Supplement: The landlord looked at it. The above problem seems to be solved by the network resource recycling bin that comes with the QNAP NAS. By default, all deleted files are stored within 180 days.

Raid, the disk array, you don’t need to study so much, you remember that the home NAS within 4 bays, you only use three Raid methods: Raid1, Raid5, Raid6.

Note: Currently, “soft Raid” is used on the home NAS.

Raid1

The mirror structure requires at least two hard disks to allow data to be recovered when one of the hard disks fails.

Advantages: The highest security, your data will be stored on two hard disks at the same time, so after hanging one piece, the data of another hard disk can usually be retained (the two hard disks together are seriously faulty, go buy lottery tickets).

Disadvantages: Disk utilization is only 50%, and two hard disks are limited, otherwise it will cause great waste (actual use space 1/n); disk performance is low.

The landlord strongly recommends the 2-bay NAS device for storing family photo videos and the 4-bay NAS to use this Raid method. Don’t forget the original intention of purchasing NAS.

Raid5

At least three hard drives are required to allow data to be recovered if one disk is damaged.

Advantage: High disk utilization, the actual available space is (n-1/n), that is, 3 3T hard disk groups Raid5, and the available space is 6T.

Disadvantages: Less secure. Under the premise of current disk quality and large capacity, once the disk enters the degraded mode, please back up the data immediately. Don’t try to add new hard drives to rebuild data online. The time is not touching, the success rate is extremely low, and once it fails, it will cause data loss.

Strongly not recommended for home users! (In fact, some small servers in some enterprises have also banned the use of Raid5 in recent years)

Raid6

At least four hard disks are required. It is an extension of Raid5, which allows two disks to fail. The actual disk utilization is (n-2/n), that is, four 3T hard disk groups Raid6, and the available space is also 6T.

Raid6 and Raid10, which are not introduced, are all related to the multi-bay NAS. The friends of the 4th position are just fine. Although they are available, they are not recommended.

Raid data reconstruction

With the Raid disk array, once a disk fails, Raid enters the degraded mode.

In theory, you can replace the failed hard drive with a new hard drive, and the NAS will automatically start Raid data reconstruction.

Note that this time is based on the amount of data, it will be very long, and the disk can be read and written continuously for several days. So in this process, the possibility of other disks failing again is there.

For data security, it is recommended to back up the most important data before attempting to rebuild Raid.

The two 4T Seagate NAS disks bought by the landlord are bad. After entering the QTS system for the first time, there are warnings in the resource monitoring and disk information in the lower right corner.

The landlord is out of stock, and the truth can only be refunded. After I explained to the senior customer service that the NAS hard disk needs to be used in pairs, the special agent helped me to transfer a piece from Guangdong. I must give a compliment.

After reinstalling, the automatic reconstruction began. The landlord was basically empty, and it took about 8 hours to rebuild and synchronize. If it is full or Raid5, it will be loose for a few days.

By the way, QNAP has a gap with the group in the details of the website. I hope that QNAP can refuel and can do the same Raid calculator page. Of course, it may be the reason why my eyes are not well found.

In addition, you can compare the contents of the compatibility list page of both parties, and you will find that Synology keeps up with the trend of the times. Other accessories supported, such as routers and UPSs, are very complete. For QNAP, the compatibility list is not perfect, of course not. Said that the things on the list are not supported by the Unicom NAS. For example, each flagship router is not in the compatibility list, but obviously you can definitely use it when you buy it back.

3, the establishment of the disk area, shared folder and permission settings

NAS’s operating system is based on Linux, so its basic concept of disk usage is very different from that of Windows.

For the QTS system use of the QNAP NAS only, in addition to the initial disk area setup when installing the system, additional operations require its built-in “storage space manager”.

The disk area here is similar to the Windows partition. The difference is that Windows partitions can be divided into N zones on a hard disk. The disk partition here is built on a separate disk, or on a Raid.

For example, TS-451 is a 4-bay NAS. I temporarily use 3 hard disks and divide two disk areas.

Among them, the Qnap disk area is based on my Toshiba 2T single hard disk; the MyData disk area is based on the Raid1 I built with two Seagate 4T disks.

If you use a 2-bay product, such as TS-251, you don’t need to worry about it, or you can use two single disks to create two volumes; or you can create a Raid1 directly and use it as a single disk.

But if it is a 4-bay product, my personal suggestion is this (not necessarily a misunderstanding):

First insert a single hard drive, not bad money to buy a NAS disk directly, like the landlord is relatively poor, buy Toshiba 2T or 3T ordinary disk, after the installation began to install QTS system.

What is the purpose of doing this? Although the system core of QNAP is on the DOM card, after you install the QTS system, it will automatically generate several system directories in the disk area that was first established, and the various APPs that you install separately, the content and configuration seem to be stored in the initial Under the disk area. Especially for friends who have download requirements, download and upload will continue to use the disk. If you install two disks as Raid1 as soon as you come up, it means that these two disks can hardly enter sleep mode and reduce disk life. Some people may say that the cache directory can be changed, but some applications such as remote Thunder, the download directory landlord will not modify.

Therefore, I recommend that the Qantas NAS of the 4-bay first use a single hard disk to install the QTS system, set it as a separate disk area, and then install various APPs, so that the shared directory and the APP cache directory will be installed. Built on top of this.

At this time, you can shut down, insert the two disks you want to do Raid1, reboot, set up Raid1, and set it as a disk area separately. In this way, you can only store important data in this disk area. When not in use, these two disks can basically be in sleep mode. I think there should be some benefits to disk life and data security.

Now let’s take a look at the “Storage Space Explorer”, first of all the “Overview” page, where you can see the basic information of the disk on the NAS, and you can create a new disk area here.

Click on “New Disk Area”, the “Disk Area Creation Wizard” will pop up. Here you can choose which new disk to use, use it alone, or use various Raid modes, and then you can see the estimated actual space available.

A spare hard disk is a blank disk. If you use the single disk + dual disk Raid1+ spare disk, the backup disk will start to take effect immediately after one of the disk failures of the Raid1. Disk, start data reconstruction. This feature is not necessary for personal use.

Click on “Hard Disk” on the left to see the details and health of each hard drive in use.

This Toshiba 2T, the landlord, can see the technology that supports error recovery control. (Seagate translation is recovery, here is the reply)

Here you can also do a disk health test, the landlord’s suggestion is not to idle to test this thing, this is the same as buying a desktop hard drive with MHDD first, in addition to let the hard drive hang faster, no meaning.

Click on “Disk Area” on the left to go to the page that operates on the volume. Here, you can perform operations such as “rename formatting to remove expansion” on the volume.

The landlord suggested that if you need to expand, please ask the official customer service before you get the relevant advice.

Let’s talk about the Bitmap function. If you use the Raid function, it is recommended to turn it on, which can reduce the time required for data reconstruction.

Finally, you can also see a list of shared folders created on each volume. You can see the initial disk partitions. There are a bunch of folders created automatically by the system. I don’t know because I didn’t see the official instructions. What are the uses of these folders, can you delete them?

After the disk area is built, the next step is to establish some other users. Click “Permission Settings – User” to enter the settings interface, take a look at the picture, not much to say here, very understandable. To get the specific address of the courtyard, you need to rely on the Unicom’s myQNAPcloud service (or third-party DDNS service).

The default web access port of QNAP is 8080. On the external network, you should be able to access your own NAS by entering XXXXX.myqnapcloud.com:8080.

Among them, XXXXX comes from the information you registered myQNAPcloud. In an external network environment, XXXXX.myqnapcloud.com is equivalent to 192.168.XX on the internal network when you are at home. Almost all routers now support uPnP, but NAS may not be able to support all routers to achieve this. So try to buy the routing model in the compatibility list.

For example, the Buffalo WZR_HP_G300NH of the landlord has opened the uPnP function and is still not supported. It can only do port mapping by itself. Fortunately, this router supports third-party firmware, and DD-Wrt is used to solve this problem.

In general, it is recommended that you use the uPnP function to implement automatic mapping of common ports on the NAS.

However, some APPs of NAS do not support uPnP functions. For example, the commonly used download client transmission, the port number used is 51413. For this port, you must do manual port mapping. Otherwise, there will be no upload. No uploads, no need to play PT.

Suggestion: Modify the 8080 port used by default. This port is often blocked by some ISPs. Click “System Settings—General Settings” to modify this port. Take 8888 as an example.

Open the myQNAPcloud application interface, in the remote access service – automatically set the router, you can see whether the router is supported, and the list of commonly used port numbers for the automatically mapped system, you can enable or disable each active port as needed.

DD-Wrt’s Source Net is special. Generally, the firmware does not have this option. DD-Wrt must fill in 0.0.0.0/0, which means that all external access requests are mapped. As for why you fill it, you don’t understand. Don’t get entangled;

The source port and the destination port are usually the same. Fill in the port that an application needs to use, such as the transmission of 51413.

IP address, which device you need to forward this network access request to under the router, such as my network, NAS is fixed IP 192.168.7.2, computer IP is 192.168.7.5, then Transmission is NAS, So here I have to fill in the IP address of the NAS: 192.168.7.2;

Note: After you add DD-Wrt, you can save the settings at the bottom of the point. If you add a point, you will generate one more to let you fill it out.

Power setting

Notification setting

SMTP server: set a mailbox, can accept notification of abnormal status

Backup/restore

Here you can restore the factory settings, there is nothing to do with Raid1, the landlord restored 1 time, Raid1 empty disk synchronization will take 8 hours.
